Daylight saving has well and truly left us and winter has arrived. It often feels as though winter is the longest season and our natural tendencies are to close off and hibernate, just for a little while. However, now is the perfect time to leap with renewed vigour into your adult ballet classes, and here’s why…
This one is ridiculously obvious, right? However it’s easy to look out the window and feel that there’s no way you’re going out in that dark, wintery weather! One of the many wonderful things about your ballet class is that it’s inside. Your exposure to outside is brief and that’s what winter coats are made for! That warm snug feeling you have at your place is what you’ll find at the studio. The heating is on (as are the lights!), it’s warm and there’s no rain, sleet or wind to contend with – only pliés, tendus and a loud teacher (in the nicest possible way). Layer up in your ballet woollies and don’t be deceived by the winter darkness, it’s not as late as you think!
A sense of community can feel nigh on impossible to find during the winter months – we all enter hibernation mode and it can be easy to miss out on interacting with other people. The ballet studio is the ideal place to keep your human connections during winter. We’re not suggesting that you start a chat session during your frappés, however it is the perfect opportunity to spend time with like-minded individuals. Everyone is there to work towards their ballet goals and after class is a great time to catch up with your ballet friends.
Yes, the pull of the couch is even greater in winter, especially if it includes a glass of wine and your favourite TV show! However the wine can wait and there’s always iView! This is when a little strict self-talk goes a long way. Your commute to the studio really is worth it when you remember that your ballet class will give you a sense of achievement, that good feeling that only moving your body can give, and an opportunity to dance with beautiful music. By moving your body you’ll release all those happy exercise hormones that will help to stave off the winter blues. And, as it’s well documented, exercise helps you sleep better. Who can resist that?!
What’s not to like with this one? Shopping for ballet gear is lots of fun, especially now retailers understand there is an adult market out there! A new pair of leg warmers or crossover does wonders for motivation. Not only will you look fantastic, it will allow you to layer so you can regulate your own body temperature throughout class. If you know that a particular area of your body feels the cold just that little bit more, then seek out some ballet woollies to help. Even better, if you’re the crafty type, get knitting and make your own. You never know, knitting ballet woollies could be your new side hustle!
Remember that your ballet class can help you through the dark winter months, even when it feels easier to skip it. Your body, brain and emotional well-being will thank you.
