DIY – How to Create Your Own Hair Accessories
I’ve always envied students with long hair – it means they can put their hair up in a neat bun and accessorise with the prettiest hair accessories for class. As much as I’d like to have a bun, maintaining long hair would drive me up the wall so I’m left to admire (and be envious) from afar.
When I first began my classes with Elancé, I’ve just pulled my hair (asymmetrical bob) back from my face securely with a headband. It’s functional but it’s far from fun. Or pretty.
While browsing through ballet stores online over a cup of coffee (as one does, naturally), I came across hair accessories and was once again filled with longing. So, I decided to improvise with the help of some tools I already have at home.
Lincraft and Spotlight were my next couple of stops and I had a bit too much fun shopping. I came at the perfect time as it was close to Spring Carnival Week and the entire country seemed to have gone horseracing mad. Lincraft and Spotlight were filled with inspirations and ideas to create your own hats and fascinators. I had a ball!
Here’s what I picked up from Spotlight.
You will need some hairpins and a glue gun – both of which you may already have.
All you need to do is simply glue the roses to the hairpins.

Usage:
I use them to pin up random sections of my hair. From afar, it looks like I have tiny rosebuds studded all over my hair because the pins are camouflaged by my dark hair. Very delicate!
If you’ve long hair, use these pins instead of your regular hairpins to secure your bun.
Tips:
#1: It’s a very fun project to do with young children on a rainy day. Just watch over them carefully when they’re handling the hot glue gun. The small roses may not be suitable for very young children either.
#2: With glue, I tend to go with the motto: more is more. It’s completely hidden away and I feel a lot more comfortable making sure the roses are securely attached to the pins than for them to fall out half way through class.
#3 The roses are found at both the Floristry and Craft sections at Spotlight although I’ve found different Spotlights place them in different sections. A quick chat with the friendly staff at lay-by should sort you out!
